2014 Madness – Sweet 16 Update (UPDATED w/ Interview)

I know everyone expects and is used to the upsets, but this year has been pretty wild. As we stand right now, 25 Entries have already lost their Champion. That’s a little over 30% in only two rounds. Dylan F. has made a statement in the first weekend having two of his five brackets in the top 3. I guess it can pay off (for now) to enter as many brackets as you can. As for the tournament itself, it does seem like it has been one of the better ones in recent years. Just feels like more games have been exciting and the quality of play has been higher. Hopefully it continues as some really interesting match-ups are ready for Tonight and Tomorrow, with the promise of even better games over the weekend. As for this update, it’s short and to the point with some basic stuff and an interview with a past champ.

The Previous winners section is larger than last year because I dug up some of my old emails and found at least the Champion from the 2009 season until last year. That being said, Luke Z., who stopped playing after the 2010 season was the first and only 2-time and back-to-back Winner. I remember him saying then that he wanted to go out on top and didn’t want to risk losing the third year. I was able to catch up with Luke this week and he gave me a few minutes of his time.

S(taudt): How does it feel being the only person to not only win twice, but do it in back to back years?

L(uke): It feels good. Really good. Solidifying yourself as one of the best of all time is a good feeling. It was a historic run that will be talked about for years.

S: Have you been filling any brackets out since? Would you ever come back? Bambi is the defending champ and currently has a top 5 bracket, if he wins this year would you come back?

L: I’ve only filled out random brackets since, entering all chalk and such. I haven’t entered any challenges competitively since retirement. Also, this year I was completely off the grid not filling any bracket out. I’ll never pull a Wizards Jordan and come back. I’ve tasted my victory and went out accordingly. I also won my fantasy football league this year (Mike Tomleague), and have decided to retire from that as well. I’m the only team who has won multiple times (3) in the 7 year history of the league, so I decided to go out on top. You need to know when to hang it up, and what better time than as the only dynasty? And who knows, maybe I’ll come back on the management side in a few years like Phil Jackson.

S: Who do you see winning it all this year?

L: I like how Wisconsin has been looking. I really liked Florida a few years ago when they won two years in a row (notice a theme?), and they’ve been playing some good ball, so I wouldn’t be surprised if they pull it out again.

S: Do you have a specific strategy when filling out your bracket?

L: The best advice I can give, and the strategy that brought me the success I had, is going with the smart pick over the heart pick. Often times you’ll pick the teams you have that “gut feeling” about. Obviously there’s the annual upsets of 12 over 5 and sometimes 13 over 4, but you can’t get too crazy, and you have to be willing to pick smart.

S: Any parting words to this years pool?

L: (drops mic)

Playoff Stat’s & Info

Notes:
>2009 Was an odd year because we still had only 4 teams and 2 weeks for each round.
>This counts appearances this year, but obviously no games were complete yet.
>This also counts third place games into GP/Points/ etc… I decided to include it since it’s still for money. If you were eliminated in the first round, your 5th and 6th place games don’t matter.

Week 12 – Where Will You Finish?

The final week is finally here. 5/6 Teams have clinched. Not 1 Single Playoff Spot is locked.

The 6th spot in (or third spot in terms of Standings) comes down to Foster Kids and Keystone St. of Mind. A Keystone win or FK loss ensures Keystone the playoff birth. In order for FK to get in they need to win, have a Keystone loss, and outscore them by 27 this week.

As for the other 5 spots. Every single team who has clinched has a chance at getting the Bye. MSIDEs Year and United just need to win. Everyone else needs a little help.

#Stuey enjoyed the top spot for a week, but surrendered it to #LVU, who has taken 1st for the first time this year.

Week 11 – Down to the Wire

One more person (Mahon) has been officially eliminated* from post season play. The defending Champ is done and there is no longer a threat of the first three time Champ or first B2B Champ. It was a good run, but in the end Manning was just not enough to get him to the next level. It really is a shame to see him go already, especially with the 4th most points in the league and over 100 more points against than the next guy. 102 to be exact. Some times fantasy can be a real SOB.

*This is true because one team must make it from the Drugs division. 3 teams have 6 or more wins in the House division (Taking 2 Wildcard spots). Even if Air wins out and BB and RB lose out. BB has the tie, which will result in a better win %, thus getting the nod.

The odds have updated with an interesting shake up.

The reigning first place team has finally took a back seat… Bambi has led the way since week 6. Dill preceding him. Welcome to the top Stuey.

Week 10 – Divisional Games Are Here + Odds

Well boys, this is it. 3 Weeks left, all divisional games, and 11/12 people still have a chance. The intensity of the next three weeks is at an all time high. Who will get in? Who will get snubbed? Who will get the Byes? It all comes down to this. With how tight the divisions are, one loss can make or break your chances.

The trade deadline is over and their obviously needed to be at least one trade get shot down. We will “officially” vote on how to handle trades that include officially eliminated players in the coming weeks.

Other than that you obviously know that I have some new stuff for the update. So read everything, enjoy the stats, and good luck going forward.

Few Tid-Bits From Pat on the Season So Far…
Fact 1: Highest Score of the Year: Week 8 – Pat w/ 175
Fact 2: Lowest Score of the Year: Week 3 – Bambi w/ 51
Fact 3: Average Score of the Year: 117.6
Fact 4: Staudt is the only person to score at least 100 points every week this year. (My personal Favorite)

I honestly don’t care which one we do. If we do during a playoff game the fantasy year will be over already, but that doesn’t matter. If we do the first option, I believe it would be week 15… the first week of the Championship. Start getting together what you prefer and if you can do either.

About: This ranking takes into account whether you had a top 6 finish that week, and gives you a point if you did so. It also gives a team an extra 2 points if the team is in the top 6 in points at the end of the year. Wins are worth 2 points, ties are worth 1, and losses are worth 0 (sorry Krack). I think it get’s skewed a little bit when you add in the total points for, but I feel that in a true points system, that aspect should be counted.

Mahon’s Consistency Rankings

About: The lower the Standard deviation, the more consistent you’re team points were week to week. These are only regular season averages and standard deviations. These ranks can be considered to be skewed because it weighs average points and consistency equally.

Week 9 – Things are Tight

This is the last week for out of division play and just about everyone is the hunt for the playoffs. There are some really big bye weeks coming up and injuries are still an issue. The depth of everyone’s team and their managing abilities are more important now that they have been all year. The trade deadline is looming and now is the time to find possible fantasy playoff gems on the waiver wire. How are you handling things? I’m fairly certain Bambi just needs one more win to clinch a spot and if it’s even possible Krack would need to win out and some serious help. As he has stated in the text thread, he is ready for next year.

Also, some of you may know that Lexi is a teacher… Well, Kurt shared this beautifully written piece by one of her 5th graders. Capture Violence and Enjoy… (You can read it better by clicking it)

PARTY INFO
So, right now it’s looking like we have two options in terms of weekends.

  • Week of December 14th – Friday, Saturday, or Sunday.
  • Sometime after Christmas – During the NFL Playoffs

I honestly don’t care which one we do. If we do during a playoff game the fantasy year will be over already, but that doesn’t matter. If we do the first option, I believe it would be week 15… the first week of the Championship. Start getting together what you prefer and if you can do either.

Week 7 – Deeper….

Shit is getting intense. Bye week pickups matter. Injuries are by the dozen. Literally. According to this, ARTICLE, 2013 has been worst for fantasy injuries in 21st century. 177 skill position players have missed ≥1 game, highest since 2000 and 25% above 2000-2013 average. Great. More will come, too. Also, Miley Cirus.

Here we go…. No 5 Q’s this week, but Party Info is there.
